A hidden gem for bird lovers – our new bird garden

Kolibris Purruja Lodge

Our new bird garden at Purruja Lodge

Imagine waking up to the sound of toucans, sipping coffee while hummingbirds flit through the flowers, and spotting scarlet tanagers from your hammock. At Purruja Lodge, birdwatching isn’t just an activity – it’s part of everyday life.

That’s why we’re creating something special:
Our very own bird sanctuary – the Jardín Emplumado.

More than a garden – a place for wonder and connection

With the help of a passionate biologist and bird enthusiast who brings experience and local knowledge, we’re turning a piece of our land into a safe haven for birds and bird lovers alike.

A raised observation platform, flowering trees, and shaded benches will soon invite you to slow down, observe, and connect with nature.

Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious about Costa Rica’s wildlife – this will be your place to pause and marvel.

Why here?

Our lodge and its surroundings are home to over 114 recorded bird species – including parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, tanagers, honeycreepers, and jacamars. Two international birders, Ray Leggett and Jorn Nielsen, spent time at our lodge and confirmed what we see every day:
This is one of the best birdwatching spots in all of Costa Rica.

As Ray said:

“It’s not difficult to see 20–30 species while enjoying your morning coffee. My kind of birdwatching!”

And Jorn added:

“I saw 107 species right in the garden during my stay – more than in any other location I visited.”

A space for you and the birds

In our future bird garden you’ll be able to:

  • Watch birds from a raised pavilion
  • Enjoy early morning light with western views
  • Learn about local species and their calls
  • Take peaceful breaks surrounded by nature

It’s not just a garden. It’s an invitation to reconnect.

When will it be ready?

The first trees are already planted, and the platform is being designed. We’ll keep you updated – and you’ll be the first to know when we open the garden to our guests.

Until then: bring your binoculars, sip your coffee, and let nature surprise you.
