Imagine this: calm turquoise waters, lush green rainforest touching the shoreline, dolphins playing at sunrise, and you right in the middle of it.
Welcome to Golfo Dulce.
Just minutes from Purruja Lodge, this tropical fjord in southern Costa Rica is one of the most magical – and least crowded – destinations in the country. Whether you’re visiting Golfito for the first time or you live nearby and want to rediscover the beauty of your region, Golfo Dulce is the perfect place to explore.
What is Golfo Dulce?
Golfo Dulce, which means “Sweet Gulf,” is a rare tropical fjord located between the Osa Peninsula and the mainland coast near Golfito, in the province of Puntarenas. It is one of only four tropical fjords in the world, and the only one in Central America.
What makes it unique?
- Crystal-clear, calm waters perfect for swimming and kayaking
- Surrounded by primary rainforest, part of the Piedras Blancas and Corcovado ecosystems
- Incredible biodiversity, from whales and dolphins to scarlet macaws and sea turtles
Here, the rainforest literally touches the sea. You can be hiking among monkeys in the morning and snorkeling with tropical fish in the afternoon, without ever getting into a car.
What can you do in Golfo Dulce?
This is a paradise for nature lovers, photographers, adventurers, and anyone looking to unwind. From Purruja Lodge, it’s easy to explore the gulf with local tours or on your own.
Popular activities include:
- Dolphin and whale watching (yes, humpback whales visit twice a year!)
- Boat trips and snorkeling in crystal-clear bays
- Kayaking along the peaceful coastlines
- Swimming and stand-up paddling
- Mangrove exploration and birdwatching
- Fishing trips with local guides
- Hiking and wildlife tours in Piedras Blancas National Park
Personal tip from your host: Ask us for our favorite local captain, he knows the gulf like the back of his hand and will take you to secret spots most tourists never see.
A living treasure of biodiversity
Golfo Dulce is not just beautiful, it’s ecologically precious.
- Home to over 300 species of birds, including toucans, hawks, and herons
- Habitat for bottlenose and spinner dolphins, which you can often see from the boat
- Nesting grounds for four types of sea turtles
- Seasonal visits from humpback whales, traveling from both the northern and southern hemispheres
Much of the area is protected, making it a haven for wildlife and a model for sustainable tourism.
